La 2 septembrie 1973 trece in nefiinta scriitorul J.R.R. Tolkien, autorul romanului "Hobbitul" si al trilogiei "Stapanul inelelor" (n. 3 ianuarie 1892) A fost profesor de anglo-saxona la Pembroke College, Oxford, din 1925 pana în 1945 si profesor de limba si literatura engleza la Merton College, Oxford din 1945 pana in 1959. În anul 2008, prestigioasa publicatie The Times l-a pus pe locul 6 în lista celor mai buni scriitori britanici din 1945, pana in zilele noastre.
